Homeschool: Post-it Sentence Building

So I have noticed that in the past few months I have not shared very much about what we are doing with school. This kinda made me a bit sad. I love homeschooling and love to share about what we do as well. Hopefully I can be a bit better at the sharing part. For our curriculum we use Connections Academy.
All our curriculum is sent to us free and I am able to add what things I would like to the curriculum.
I love homeschooling and would never have any other way. Teaching these little read heads is one of the most rewarding things I do each day. It is also THE HARDEST.

Seriously no joke:)

I try to make learning fun, whenever I can. My kids love games, so I try to incorporate this into school.
Ya know get them learning without knowing their learning. Yep I am sneaky like that.

I picked up two sets of post-its at Wal-Mart.
In blue and pink.

Guess who got which color.....

Yep blue for Keagan, Pink for Libby

I wrote out a sentence in each color. Each word of the sentence went on a post it note.

I then placed the post-it notes throughout our kitchen and laundry room.

The kids then went on a hunt for words.

excuse the jammie jams
sometimes we do school in pjs:)

Having their own colors helped them know which ones were theirs.

once they collected their words
they identified which ones were nouns, verbs, and adjectives

I made Keagan's sentence longer with more nouns.

Then they made their sentences.

This is a great activity for kindergardeners and first graders.
It is helping them learn sentence structure and learning more about parts of speech.
Plus they had fun doing this and forgot they were even doing school, which is what I love.
Learning should be fun!

Hope you are having fun with your littles today. What have you guys been working on?

  1. My oldest is in first grade (tear) and he has been learning all types of new words. So we did sight word baseball. I made all the bases out of construction paper and taped them to my kitchen floor. I then wrote all the sight words he is working on on index cards. If he got the word right, he moved to the next base. Everytime he made it home, he got a point on his score sheet. He had a BLAST!! Just thought I would share! And homeschooling is the hardest and most rewarding job ever!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas!

  2. LOVE this idea!!! And will be using it next week after I get to the store for post its. Thanks for sharing!!!!
I'll try to make this short...we have been learning how to run a grocery store for math. It is part of Saxon Math we use, but anyone could do this. If you interested I will email you more details.
BTW-I TOTALLY agree about homeschooling! SO worth it, BUT SO HARD some days! I still would never trade it!

  3. This really looks like fun! It would be great to pull the sentences for book they have read too.

  4. I have been doing a similar thing with my daughter recently though just with flashcards - like the idea of using post its as then they can be stuck anywhere. How did you teach parts of speech as so far I have just been getting my daughter to make the sentence make sense and I am sure it would be a lot easier if she knew what a verb was!

  5. I did a scavenger hunt with my son to review sight words-- each piece of paper had a clue he had to read leading him to find his next clue and a sight word-- he loved it! I love this idea, too!

  6. Assigned to write a bibliography? Whatever your reasons why you should write one, you've got to know how to write it well. Likely unfamiliar to many, writing an annotated bibliography comes up at least once as part of every student's school assignments. See more resume format for scholarship application
