I don't know about you, but clearance racks, coupons, and thrift stores are my favorite places to go shopping for new clothes. Recently I've got into sharing the prices of my clothes when ever I do outfit posts on my blog, since I was getting a bunch of emails asking how I budget for the brands I wear. The simple answer is: when there are sales at stores, I will only purchase something if I have a coupon (that works on sale/clearance prices), or if it is really marked down low (under $10). One of my favorite sales are the ones at H and M, when they have their clearance 50% off -- that is always a great time to stock up on basics for the next season.
Enough talking about sales and how I shop, let me show you how I do this with an outfit post.
What I'm Wearing
Straight-leg Jeans -- Ann Taylor Loft via Thrift Store ($12)
Tunic Tee -- H&M ($6)
Cami -- Forever 21 ($1.80)
Cardigan -- Forever 21 ($6)
Leopard Wedges -- Payless ($10)
Gold Drop Earrings -- Hand-me-Down (Free)
My favorite local thrift shop is more on the pricier side, but that is because they only sell clothing that is recent (2 years at most) and from higher-end stores (Anthro, Ann Taylor Loft, J.Crew, Kate Spade, etc...). But sometimes they have really great sales, like when I bought these jeans I also got two FREE shirts with purchase, making the total cost of these jeans only $4 -- great deal for Loft jeans. My advice for you, find out when your local thrift stores are hosting sales, and if they ever have special deals on certain days, because those will be the days you get the most bang for your money.
There is one more thing I should mention. When your out shopping and you see all of these great deals, don't crazy and buy everything you like. Ask yourself a few questions before making that final purchase (I usually ask myself these questions in the dressing room).
- Do the clothes fit me how I like? If not, will I really take the time to refashion/tailor them? Or will they just sit in a pile for weeks on end (or months)?
- If this wasn't marked down, would I still LOVE it if it was full price? Or is the price tag just making me want to buy it?
- Do I feel like a million-bucks in this? If you don't feel amazing in the clothing, you won't wear it that often.
- Do I have anything in my closet that matches this? Or, do I need to buy more things to go with it?
- Can you think of at least 3 different ways to style it? If you can't remix it with other things already in your closet, you won't get that much use out of it.
