I homeschool for many reasons, but one
of the main reasons I home school is because I know that this is what is
best for my children. We started with preschool and each year it was
confirmed again that being home, schooling my children is exactly
where God wants me to be. When you homeschool, sometimes you're in
the dark. You don't have another teacher or co-worker you are
bouncing off ideas and problems. My first year was the hardest. I
cried almost everyday. I was so lost. I had read everything I could
get my hands on about homeschooling. I prepared each week for our
lessons, but I was still lost. It was a scary journey in the
beginning I took with my littles. We're still on that journey, but
the road is getting a little bit easier, each mile we go.
As I am preparing for a new school year (we start on September 9), I have begun collecting things. I figured out what subjects the kids wanted to learn about and what I knew they needed to learn about. There is a difference. I may not be ready to teach division this year and they may not be too excited to learn it, but that is where we are at. We are in the multiplication and division season of homeschooling and it kinda scares the heck out of me. Math was never my forte in school. English and reading is where I thrived. Oh and don't forget Art. I seriously rocked at Art! Learning new things and teaching new things can seem to be quite a daunting task when your starting out. It is very easy to feel pressure. To feel like you are not enough to teach your little ones.
Recently I was in Lakeshore Learning. I love this store. They have amazing teaching tools. It can be pretty pricey though.….Ok it can be really pricey. You have to shop smart there and take advantage of every.single.sale and coupon that comes your way. I was walking through the store, mentally making a shopping list for what we would need for our upcoming school year. There are so many games, manipulatives, and doodads. It can become quite overwhelming. I started feeling myself becoming overwhelmed, knowing that all these educational goodies wouldn't fit into my little school budget....wondering if I would be able to teach them everything they needed to know. Math symbols, science topics, prepositions, paragraph editing, etc all started filling my mind. Then I said a prayer. A prayer to help my heart be calm. A prayer to help myself know that I do not need to buy out the store to provide a stellar education for my children (although it would be pretty sweet to go on a shopping spree there...just saying). As a Mom, I can sometimes doubt myself and my mad skills (we all have them). As a homeschooling Mom sometimes my doubts can multiply themselves like crazy. I pray that if you too have those doubts, that you push them from your mind. Right here, right now is exactly where you should be. If you are homeschooling munchkins, and hear those doubts in your mind, say a prayer. A prayer to give you the courage to know your abilities. A prayer to give you the strength to know how to be able to see your little learners....to see how they learn. For my children we play games. That is what I reminded myself, while in the store. I could buy workbook after workbook, but it is through hands on play that my children retain their knowledge. So if you are feeling the pressure to be a “super mom”, remember there is no such thing. Be you because that is exactly who your children need you to be. Be the best you that you can be.
I'm
sorry for the rambling of my thoughts today. I guess the main reason
for this post is just to share that yes sometimes I feel overwhelmed
with homeschool. Yes I have days where I have no clue what the heck I
am doing, but I don't give up. These kids and their little minds mean
the world to me. I have been entrusted
to raise them and to teach them. I am
thankful for each day I get to do this. So when I have a bad day and
the pressure gets to me, I take a step back and remember. Remember
who I am, where I came from, and why I am here. I pray that if today
is your “feeling the pressure” kind of day, you will be able to
find peace. Know you are amazing and know that you and they are
always worth
it.

Great post friend. WOW do I ever have these days too!! And right now is one of them as I am preparing for "third grade". Since our move last year and starting school very late the boys are behind in math. So I am having them redo second grade math. Just that thought had me down. And then going through all our history and science stuff as well as all the other subjects. I was fReAkInG oUt!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is when I did just what you are talking about...I stopped and asked my Heavenly Father for peace.
Homeschooling does NOT have to look like public school (not that dislike public school). And I have to remember why we homeschool and what works best for my boys.
Thanks as always for the gentle reminders.
Good luck as you are planning. September 9 is when we will begin too.
Tasha you're an amazing Mom to your sweet boys. By planning your teaching to their needs proves it right there. You're awesome lady and good luck with third grade it will be an experience for both of us I'm sure;)
DeleteI hear you and I pray you continue to find comfort in the fact that you don't have to teach your children... God will give you the strength and wisdom to teach them.
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for cheap manipulatives, I recently did a posting on 60 free manipulatives you can find around the house.

I homeschool as well. I've been having some anxiety about this year (Grade 1) but I'm trusting God will help me deliver the best learning lessons possible.
Wishing you a wonderful day.
xoxo
I'm checking that out. Thank you;)
DeleteMy kids school does a math program online that we can do from home, If you want to check it out its at www.IXL.com
ReplyDeleteSorry if im double posting this............. Its www.IXL.com getting to do anything on the computer is a bonus for my kids even if it is math (I have ONE crazy math lover, our 3rd grader) she comes home and writes her multiplication up to 100 for fun. IT has all kinds of math all every age level........another site they get on is called www.coolmathgames.com its not near as educational but its ok for fun sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWe just tried out IXL and my son loved it! Thanks for sharing it;)
DeleteYour welcome, Im glad he enjoyed it.
DeleteDo you do a membership or just the trial 20 questions a day thing?
DeleteAs a public school (Jr High) Math teacher, AND a real supporter of home schooling moms...
ReplyDeletethe phrase "math isn't really my thing" is something I hear from homeschooling moms, A LOT... and I have to tell you, it makes my Math-loving heart shed a tear each time.
So- I just want to take a moment to implore... to BEG you wonderful, amazing, rock star homeschooling moms... if Math really isn't your thing- please find someone, ANYone who totally geeks out over Math, and let your children soak in some of that geekyness!!
You can find these geeks at your local public schools, junior colleges, and ALL OVER You tube. Believe me- they will bend over backwards to show your kids how AMAZING math is- whether it's their job or not. Really, the magnitude of the Math geek's love of Math is such that it cannot help but spill out all over young minds.
YAY school! ;-)
I agree! My son actually loves math so I know I need to step it up. Do you have any online math sites you recommend?
DeleteSure! Other people have mentioned IXL, which is great. It would be on my list too. Other sites for math:
Deletemath.com
purple math
hooda math
infinite algebra
of course, the common core site is good... ish
k-5mathteachingresources has lots of good ideas
Honestly, I have found some of the BEST stuff just looking up my objective on You Tube. Some teachers and classes have made the most fun and creative videos :-)
GO FORTH and embrace your inner Math-geek!
Do you feel like your kids are ahead or equal to their public/private school counter parts when it comes to the subjects you are teaching them? I had friends growing up that were home schooled and they always seemed vastly ahead of me in things like history and English and equal to me in math and science. I am a home-school advocate these days since government is running all the schools and it seems as if kids are not learning the material just memorizing it to pass tests. So good on you for committing to your children's educations!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is definitely ahead in everything. Shes starting third grade curriculum this year. If she was in public school she'd be entering first grade. My son is at level on most things. He struggles with spelling and writing, but we really worked hard this summer so he's doing better.

DeleteWill there be a time when you will not homeschool your children? I am not an advocate nor opponent of homeschooling and think parents should do what is best for their child(ren), I just have noticed first hand once children become teenagers they miss out on some great classes or gifted and talented programs offered in traditional schools.
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason to "miss out" on any programs, classes, activities, etc. when you home school. Most public schools let home schoolers take classes "a la carte", especially high school classes. Join a home school co-op and you will have joint classes with other home schoolers, and the people teaching those classes are highly educated, experienced parents or friends of the home school community. Join sports from the public school, or parks and rec, or the home school/private school leagues. Take advantage of community vocational training opportunities, college classes, and on-line classes. The home school education experience is much more extensive than public school education.
DeleteMy wife is a big supporter for home schooled kiddo's. We have friends from all over the world that homeschool. If I could do a re-do, I would home schooled my two sons. Yes this is a Dad saying this. A child is different from children. What I mean is each child has his or her own skills and public school with too many children to one class won't even get a chance to excell in those skills. And I am not saying public schools are bad, I am saying, I think teaching child/ren in homes is wee bit better. There are many programs that offer elective programs for homeschooled kids to feed those social educations.
ReplyDeleteHang in there! I totally know what you mean about the Math- it was the one thing I loathed about homeschooling, and that carried over to when I went to college also. It's one of the big worries about homeschooling my own children (once they reach that age, that is- my first is only 18 months!) But, funny thing happened today. My little sister was frustrated with her pre algebra work she's doing...much as I was all through school...and I found myself able to help her, and explain it. I know it's not the same amount of pressure as being mom and teacher and budgeter extraordinaire, but it felt pretty darn awesome to be able to help with something that I had always struggled with. A fascinating youtuber to watch with math would be ViHart. She uses math like art- and art like math! She taught me what the Fibonacci sequence was- something that I have never even cared about, but now is fascinating!
ReplyDeleteI hear you. I am not a homeschool mum but i still have days where everything is just overwhelming and too much. I find prayer is my best remedy too. God knows us more than we know ourselves and knows our children more than we do and putting myself and them in his hands makes my load lighter and more enjoyable. I hope you are feeling more on top of things soon. XXXXXX

I needed this! Today was our very first day of homeschool pre k. My kids are 2 and 4. Most of the day I had tears in my eyes because I was so overwhelmed. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI think all homeschooling parents have those moments. I know I do. English has been a struggle the last few school days here. It was not clicking for my eight year old. One of the wonderful things about homeschooling is you can take a break from it and come back to it later in the day. It is OK to spend a week on a lesson that should only take one day.
ReplyDeleteWe have a limited budget on homeschool supplies. You want the best for you children and yes you need to pray for God's help. I was able to buy everything my girls needed (1st and 3rd grade) for $77.xx. That included shipping and tax. Last year I found http://allinonehomeschool.com/
We use it for science and history, it is completely free.
We also check out lots of books from the library. Usually about 30 at a time.
You should really check out khan academy. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/multiplication-division I'm a math geek but sometimes my teens don't learn the way I do. Also, never underestimate playing games.
ReplyDeleteI don't homeschool, but I did come across this free offer that you and your readers might be interested in. You can get a free (free shipping too) homeschool ID card for your kids through the end of September 2013. Thought you would be interested!

Seriously check out khan academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/) Such an amazing site! You can brush up on your own skills there too, and tons of videos with explanations, even for the simple stuff :)
ReplyDeleteI am a middle school math teacher and I recently found this AMAZING site that has a whole lot of math games that my middle schoolers love playing, and it has almost every subject I can think of: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/
ReplyDeleteI love reading your posts and I look forward to being a stay-at-home mom when I have kids (as of now, I just got married less than a year ago)
Good luck with school! I hope this website helps!
