Thrifty Living: Homemade Friday Night Pizza Night

Photobucket

Alright first of all how about a big WAHOO for Fridays! I love Fridays!
I know it is only Tuesday, but oh boy of I love TGIF!
Fridays are the start of the weekend. The start of two whole days where we have no homeschool lessons, I can craft it up like nobody's business, and we get to enjoy a family pizza and movie night.

Seriously my favorite day of the week!

So let me tell how we make our Friday night pizza night homemade.

Now first of all I understand how easy it is to go down to Little Caesars and get a $5 pizza. I mean I used to be supporting them every now and then too, but not anymore. Remember I am having a Homemade Year, which means no takeout.

Well this is how we do Friday night Pizza night on the homemade side.

I found this AMAZING recipe a few weeks ago and have been using it. It was from HERE.
I changed mine up a bit and everyone loves it!
There is no rise time, which makes having a homemade pizza in under 30 minutes actually doable.
How awesome is that?

Here is my Pizza crust recipe:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 4 tbl Italian Seasonings
Put all ingredients in your mixer and mix until a soft dough ball forms.
If your dough is too sticky add a bit more flour.

Put your mixer on level 2 and let your dough knead for 5 minutes.

While the mixer is doing its magic I get out my toppings. I sometimes use store bought sauce and sometimes I make it. Depends on my mood.

We love a supreme pizza. So I brown a pound of sausage and only use part.
I save the rest for other pizza nights. Cooked meat freezes great!
Quick to thaw too. Just run under warm water. Defrost in just a few minutes.

Roll your dough out onto your pizza pan. I use a round pan with holes on the bottom.

Add toppings like green bell peppers, fresh tomatoes, purple onions, pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella cheese.

Have fun with it!

Layer on your toppings and then bake for 20-25 minutes @ 375'

Brush crust with olive oil and let cool for a few minutes before cutting.

Serve it up and enjoy.

We have been enjoying this pizza while watching these few movies lately.

  2. I LOVE family pizza nights. We do it where everyone gets a small portion of my homemade dough and they each make their own pizzas. It's always a big hit and such fun!

  3. Friday night is pizza night for us too.
And we also use to do the "$5" pizza. NOT anymore. It is strictly homemade and 100 times better. I use Pioneer Woman's pizza dough recipe. It does have to rise, but I have done it so many times I just prepare ahead of time. There is nothing like HOMEMADE pizza!

  4. We also do Friday night pizza and movies :) I use PW's pizza crust like Tasha above me :) I have to ask what you do for your sausage, what kind of sausage do you buy? Is it Italian sausage?? My husband always wants sausage on his but it's so much work! That's a good idea freezing some for the future.

  7. Yay! I'm trying this tomorrow night. We're watching Matilda (we just finished the book). Too fun! Have you ever tried it with whole wheat flour? I was thinking of substituting half wheat for white. I don't comment enough, but I read your blog every day, and I love seeing all of the cute things you are up to! Miss you!

  10. Great recipe! We make our own pizza, too. Sooo much yummier, isn't it?! We love a really thin, crispy crust, and use Chef Boyar-dee sauce - our fav. We've never made our own crust from scratch, we use Aunt Millie's thin crust mix and it turns out really great! If I had a bread mixer though, I'd probably be making pizza more than once a week! lol!

  13. I made this for my family last night. They loved it! I cut the amount of Italian seasoning way down (1 Tablespoon for a double batch) because the blend I use is pretty strong. Mine took about 30 min to bake. It is so great to have a dough recipe that I don't have to prep way in advance.

  14. My family loves when i do homemade pizza since I found your site. Even my parents like it. My question is, Can I make the dough ahead of time and freeze it?

  15. How funny--I use the exact same recipe! I accidentally made it with half the yeast once, and it turned out exactly the same; it may be worth a try to see if it works for you. I now use 1 teaspoon instead of the 2.25t (a packet of yeast) every time.

  16. Just used this crust recipe for a buffalo chicken pizza and it turned out sooooo good! We skipped the Italian seasoning and topped it with baked chicken tossed in Buffalo Wing sauce mixed with a little butter and garlic powder, some extra wing sauce spread on the crust, shredded cheese and drizzled ranch dressing over it after baking. I love how quick this crust comes together. It's just the two of us so we usually just bake it on a cookie sheet cause we don't have a pizza stone so we split the dough in half and save some in the fridge for later.

  17. Hi there! I absolutely looovvee your blog! I don't know how many useful tips I've gotten from it since first finding it! Freezing milk has saved us so much money! I'm looking forward to doing homemade chicken bacon ranch pizza for my husband tomorrow night and I have all the ingredients exceopt for the instant dry active yeast. I do however have the envelopes of rapid rise yeast. Can I use them interchangeably in this recipe? I'm just now starting out with bread making and such. I'm too nervous to start because I don't want to mess it up and waste ingredients! :-/

    1. I would expect so--pretty much all basic bread doughs are freezable.

  19. This sounds like an interesting recipe. When I've made mine (been a long while!), I add garlic powder and some shredded cheese blend. My son loves it.

  20. I only have a hand mixer, would that still work for this crust?
