Morning friends!! Today I wanted to take a moment and talk about how I stayed on the healthy eating track this last pregnancy. Before I found out I was preggo, I had already been focusing on healthy eating and living. I had lost forty pounds and gotten into a great habit of exercising. I started this change when I found out I had pcos back in 2015. By focusing on healthy eating and living, I took back control of my life. For so long I felt that grief and my pcos was ruling my life. A few weeks after my diagnosis, I decided to make a change. I'm so thankful I stood up for my health because less than a year later my pcos symptoms were managed and I was pregnant.
Once I became pregnant, I knew my hard work wasn't over. When I made changes to my diet and activity level, it was not a temporary fix. It was a complete life style change. This life style change needed to continue whether I was pregnant or not. I made a promise to myself and my new little bean that I would do everything in my power to have a healthy pregnancy.
With Libby, I didn't take very good care of myself. I ate tons of processed stuff, had a long, uncomfortable pregnancy. I also ended up with preeclampsia. My red head was totally worth every bit of heartburn, but I knew I could do better. After much research and finding a great midwife, I knew I could have a healthy pregnancy.
The first thing I did was brought good food into my home. As the main meal planner and shopper, I have total control over what food is brought into my home. I meal plan, prep healthy snacks, and eat treats in moderation.
I still had cravings, but I tried really hard to eat well. Was I perfect? Heck know! I still had treats and gave in to cravings, but I kept it all in moderation.
I made an effort to have a smoothie each day, drink a ton of water (I tracked it on a dry erase board), and ate a lot of protein. I also took fish oil, vitamin e, calcium and magnesium, and prenatal supplements.
I also committed to exercise as often as I could. I managed to keep up my workouts till about 30 weeks. After that my whole body hurt... Especially my hips, so most exercises were out of the question. I was pretty proud of myself for sticking with it that long. It honestly felt good to move in my pregnancy (until 30 weeks of course) I had a good amount of energy throughout and I know it was because I tried to fuel myself with good stuff.
Overall I think it was consistency that helped me. I took it a day at a time and tried to do the best I could for my baby and me.
Growing a baby is tough, exhausting, emotional work. Pregnancy is truly a glorious, messy, absolutely wonderful thing and I'm thankful I've been able to experience it. Each pregnancy matters because each sweet baby matters.
I'm continuing with my healthy eating. It's honestly become a way of life. We still have days, where junk food is had, but we make a bigger effort to eat that rainbow each day and give ourselves the best.
XO Danielle
You're an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet!
DeleteMy husband has a hard time getting in his water so I have added a few orange slices or a sliced strawberry to his water. I saw it in a spa onetime and really enjoyed it. You can refill a cup that has the fruit in it all day long. Really yummy.
ReplyDeleteOh yes that's my favorite! Lately I've been loving berries in my water. Yum!
DeleteYay, all the best wishes for you :) Have been reading your blog for a few years now and have always been impressed by your positive attitude and spirit. Change is hard and you have accomplished so much - best wishes for your exciting future :)
ReplyDeleteaww thank you and I'm so glad you've been with me so long. That makes my heart so happy :)
DeleteI really appreciate this blog post! I have been trying to find weekly meal plan ideas for women who are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant. What I have found so far has done nothing but overwhelmed me...the meals either a)require the kind of food shopping that is out of my budget or b) are too time consuming to prepare (as much as I'd love to be cooking all day, I work and am finishing up my PhD). I just ordered the book you recommended...do you have any other recommendations for uncomplicated and affordable meal planning resources for pregnant women?
ReplyDeletehmmmm that's a really good question....I found looking up regular meal plans for healthy eating helped (I just eat more of the food). I follow Fit Pregnancy and Fit to be Pregnant on facebook and their blogs. They are websites that both offer a lot of great ideas.
DeleteYou look MARVELOUS!!! I'm SO glad that your PCOS symptoms are under control (I have this as well) and that your long awaited pregnancy is progressing normally!!!!! Even your skin is looking better (I know first hand about this issue also!) You are simply GLOWING Danielle!!! I'm sure that hubby of yours has noticed these changes-if not- bop him on the head and tell him to "get with the program and pay attention"! This is HARD work you and your body is doing!!!
ReplyDeleteOne word of caution about PCOS-AVOID ALL HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!!!!! I read an article that states that Yoplait yogurt has High Fructose Corn Syrup in it!! Don't know whether ALL versions of Yoplait have it in them, but @ least some do.. READ LABELS!!! Also, I know you are busy getting ready for your move (will it happen before or after the baby is born?), but please send more pictures of you and your baby bump as time progresses, and OF COURSE, after she is born!! I wonder if she will be another redhead, like your son and daughter? Will you have her @ home with the Midwife present or @ a hospital with said Midwife? Were your other two children born @ home? (If I'm getting too personal, just ignore those questions). I guess "Once a nurse, always a nurse"!!
Oh yes I know about HFCS. It's the worst. I have been able to find yogurt without it and gogurt is made without it too. It's about time some of these companies kick that stuff out of their recipes. We will be moving soon after baby comes and I definitely plan to do more bump updates. I've got to document this pregnancy :)
DeleteOH and you are not asking too much...I've actually thought of doing videos on my kids birth stories for journaling purposes and because people are curious. My other two were hospital births on army bases.
DeleteAlso, if you use flavorings to your water, avoid any and all sugar substitutes with the exception of STEVIA (As long as that's ok'd by your midwife. I use to add "Crystal Light" to my water, but was told by my Dr. to switch to Crystal Light "PURE" which only adds STEVIA!!
ReplyDeleteOh that's good to know. I'm going to check out the "pure" kind. Thanks :)
DeleteYou look great!! Enjoy your bliss. You earned it.
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
DeleteYou look beautiful. You inspire others. Even when you give up for a bit, you get right back to your healthy habits. Thank you for all you do.

ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteabout a year ago I copied a bread recipe of yours. It had a cup of buttermilk and used half white and half wheat flour. I can't find it anywhere on your blog. I even tried googling it but no luck. Do you know which one I'm talking about and can you post the recipe again? Thanks, Lynn
