Hello Blissful and Domestic readers! I am so excited to be a guest blogger for Danielle's Hair Week. I am going to show you how to make some fun hair accessories and a cute hair style to showcase them. Let me introduce myself...
My name is Karen, and I blog over at Syzygy of Me. I used to blog mostly about the greeting cards I make, but just recently started blogging about other crafts and projects. I have been a crafter for as long as I can remember, and even sold some of my crafts at my Dad's craft show booth when I was a kid (remember macrame owls?). I still sell at craft shows (not macrame owls!), and one day may open up my own etsy shop. I got crafty genes from both of my parents, so sometimes I tend to go overboard! Every time I see something I like, I want to make it myself instead of buying it. That means I crochet, knit, sew, make all my own greeting cards, paint, stamp, make jewelry, and will re-purpose just about anything!
Well enough about me, lets get on with the tutorial! I am going to show you how to make some cute Fun Foam Ponytail Holders.
You will need:
fun foam in assorted colors
heat tool
rubber stamps
permanent ink such as Staz-on (optional)
1/8" hole punch
1/4" ribbon
hair elastics
Rubber stamps with a bold outline and few details work best for this project. Something like these...
You will start by heating an area of the foam just big enough for your stamp with the heat tool. The foam will start to turn shiny and curl up when it is ready to be stamped. (And please be careful with the heat tool - no fires or burned fingers, please!)
Ink up your stamp (if you are using ink), and carefully press the stamp into the heated foam. Press hard - you are smooshing the foam with the stamp to leave an impression - and hold the pressure for 10-15 seconds until the foam starts to cool a little.
Remove the stamp and admire the impression it just made! If you are going to use the same piece of foam again, cut out your stamped impression before heating the foam for the next one. If you don't use ink and don't get a good impression, you can reheat the same area and stamp it again.
Once the foam has cooled completely, trim around the image leaving a little border around the impression.
Punch two holes near the center of your image.
Thread a piece of ribbon (4-5" in length) through the holes,
then tie to a hair elastic.
Trim the ends of the ribbon, and that's all there is to it!
Here is one without the ink. They can be just as pretty!
You could make several of them the same, or use a variety of colors and images. Have fun with the colors - the combinations are endless.
Since this is hair week, here is a cute hairstyle my little munchkin was kind enough to model that you can use several of these for. Simply divide hair into as many sections as you want, and secure with the ponytail holders. I used to wear my hair like this in high school way back when!
