Floral Summer Dress Re-purpose

Originally I had BIG plans for Miss Priss and her Easter dress, but all the fervor left me when I realized we would we in between wards. Well Saturday morning I woke up with an itch to sew. I decided to whip something up for Miss Priss. I wanted a simple summer dress, she could wear the next day for our Easter Celebrations. I checked my fabric stash (the stuff I haven't packed up yet) and found this Women's XL shirt. I knew it was perfect for the dress I had in mind.

I folded the shirt in half and cut out the shape
I wanted for the dress. A very simple tank dress shape.
Sorry no measurements, I was winging it.
You could always use one of your little girls dresses as a pattern also.

I then held it up to Miss Priss. My "winging it" worked out this time,
so I didn't have to cut anymore.

I took my back piece and did a tuck and roll.
I needed to make sure the raw edge was neatly
tucked in and sewed nice and tight:>

I then moved onto my arm holes.
I did more tuck and rolls.
Pinned it down and sewed away.

Once both arm holes were finished, I pinned my front and back together,
right sides facing each other, and sewed it together (up the sides).

The last thing I did, was I turned it inside out and sewed
my straps to the back piece.

Here is how it turned out.

It is such a light fabric and will be perfect during
our 100+ summers here in Vegas:>

  3. Hello! New follower here.

I laughed when I read your post about "winging it". Ugh. Sadly that is relate-able to all of my sewing projects. :)

    You did a great job!

  8. Love the dress! I just got my featherweight up and running again tonight, with a little help from one of my roommates. I love to upcycle clothes, usually for my grand daughter, or my adopted grand niece. I am actually getting my 14 year old interested in my sewing something for her. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and am in the Machias ward. I did also make s pair of ruffle skirts for my home teacher's little girls. I was going to make matching tops, but figured I had better give them to the girls before they outgrew them. I finally figured out why I hadn't the heart to sew for awhile, my featherweight isn't my main machine, so her being out of commission for a bit want the problem..... I think it was because my sewing cat disappeared right after Christmas. Another stray adopted our unusual family, and she watched me sew a few blocks tonight, when one of my housemates announced he had fixed my bobbin case. If you're curious about any of the stuff I've sewn, check out my blog. I also just posted the story of my sewing cat, Pepper, and our newest addition, Precious. Nice to find the blog of another frugal, upcycling member! I am going to start following your blog, I envy you the warm weather, I'm freezing tonight. Time to go climb in bed and get warm.
