John Henry was a book we read a week or so ago. It is one that was on our 100 Day book list. I talked about this book list when we celebrated our 100th day of school. I decided, since this was a more wordy book, that I would break it up into a few parts. We did a few activities to reinforce what we had read. This turned out to be such a funny read. The dramatics in the story just brought giggles to my littles, which I was thankful for. It made reading it to them 100 times more fun.
Here is what we did:
We talked about what a tall tale or a folk tale was. We also talked about what it meant to have strength and courage.
We made some TALL art. (excuse bubba's stare)
We painted a picture of a scene from the book.
Once another day, which I forgot to take pictures of, we went to the park and drew pictures of rainbows. In the story it talks about how John Henry always had a rainbow around his shoulders. We finished off the book when some running races, just like John Henry did in the story.
Our reading aloud of John Henry went well. I am so thankful for all the books we have been able to read together. Reading and doing these activities together has really just brought a new feel to our schooling. Everyday they look forward to what book we will be reading, whether it is a chapter book or not, they get excited about what activity we will do that day. I am thankful for everything I have learned so far this year. I swear as I teach them, I am learning myself and it is amazing.
Have a Blessed Day!
