Before we started reading this week we talked about what it meant for a book to be a historical fiction book. We talked about the setting and the time period. Thank you so much Tasha for giving me the idea to use historical fiction books in my teachings. You always inspire :>. Anyway now onto our lesson plan that I came up with for this book.
Activity: What does courage mean? Look it up in the dictionary. Talk about the time that this story is set in. Where are they on a map? Do Q is for Quilt worksheet. Talk about how one makes a quilt.
Day 2: Chapter 3 & 4
Activity: Talk about different woodland animals. Talk about skunks specifically. Look at pictures of them online. Make Toilet Paper roll Skunk craft.
Day 3: Chapter 5 & 6
Activity: Talk about David and Goliath. Make Johnny Cakes
Johnny Cakes
1 cup cornmeal (white or yellow)
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup boiling water
½ cup milk
Directions:
1. Grease a non-stick skillet or griddle or frying pan with a little butter, margarine, oil, or non-stick spray. Do this even if you are using a “non-stick” surface to make the cakes easier to flip.
2. Put the frying surface on a medium heat setting or burner.
3. Mix the cornmeal and salt together.
4. Add water, a little at a time, stirring constantly until cornmeal is smooth. (It will remind you of the southern USA dish called grits except thicker.)
5. Add milk and stir again.
6. Drop spoonfuls of batter onto the hot frying surface just like you would for pancakes.
7. Cook like you would pancakes, flipping when the side against the griddle has browned.
8. When both sides have cooked, remove from the pan and keep warm until meal time.
You can eat these “cakes” with butter, jam, molasses, etc. They also are very useful when cleaning that last bit of food/gravy from your plate! Yum yum !
Day 4: Chapter 7 & 8
Activity: Build houses out of Lincoln Logs. Talk about how houses were built in the 1700's.
Activity: Draw a picture of our house and talk about the book.
