Family Home Evening: Samuel the Lamanite

The other night I was trying to plan out our Family Home Evening for Sunday, when I came upon this site. It is called LDSsplash.com It is such a neat site. There are all kinds of Family Home Evening ideas, separated by topic. I easily found our lesson for Family night and then I hopped on over to here and was able to find a delicious sugar cookie recipe for dessert. All in all we had an awesome night with a little help from my blogger friends :> Thanks!

Now onto the details of our Family Home Evening:

Samuel the Lamanite

What You Needed:
Make a cape, and any other clothes that Samuel the Lamanite might wear (use sheets or newspaper, or whatever else you might have around the house).
Marshmallows or cotton balls (we used cotton balls).

The Lesson:
Read (or tell) the story of Samuel the Lamanite. We used the GAK kit picture 314. Talk about how the Lord protected him. Have someone dress as Samuel and have everyone else be Nephites. Let them throw the marshmallows or cotton balls at "Samuel" and review how the Lord protects us when we do His will.

The Dessert:

I got the sugar cookie from Nursery Rhymes and Sweet Times.

Here is the recipe:

3/4 c sugar
 2/3 c Crisco shortening
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
4 tsp milk
1 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

In large bowl, cream together Crisco, sugar, and vanilla.
Add egg and milk. beat until light and fluffy.
In separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add to sugar mixture 1/3 at a time until incorporated.

Scoop onto parchment lined baking sheet by rounded teaspoons
Bake at 375 for 8-12 minutes.
I took Angie's suggestion on using parchment paper, which I have never really used for cookies before, and they came out so nice. This was probably THE best batch of sugar cookies I have made in a long time.

The cookies were so yummy. I used this recipe for the icing.

And if you happen to fall asleep after FHE, when a certain little girl is still awake, you may get stuffed with cotton balls:>

He really did stay asleep while she climbed on him and stuffed cotton balls around him. In fact he is still snoring on the couch. Poor guy is exhausted from a hard day work
