Old-Fashioned Buttermilk White Bread

Photobucket

This is seriously the yummiest bread ever! This is our go-to bread during the week. Last Thursday I was particularly in a baking bread kind of mood. I baked 2 loaves, which was good thing. We had company over and we all gobbled up one of the loaves. Since my family loves this recipe so much, I thought I would share with all my friends. This is a bread machine recipe, which of course is always the easiest and yummiest.

Here Is What You Need:

1/3 cup Water
1 cup buttermilk
2 tbl of butter or vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
4 tbl brown sugar
3 cups flour
2 1/4 tsp yeast
4 tbl gluten (optional)

Here Is What You Do:

Put all ingredients in your bread machine, according to your manufacturers settings. Mine go in the exact order listed above.

Select dough setting. Mine takes about 1 hr 30mins

Once your dough cycle is finished, punch down the dough and place it in a greased loaf pan. I like to use Pam. I spray it all over the loaf pan, place in my bread dough and then spray the top with more Pam. I then put plastic wrap over the top and wait for it to rise. It should rise up and above the edges of the pan.

Once doubled in size, bake at 350' for 30 minutes or until lightly brown on top.

Take out of the oven and immediately rub a cold stick of butter over the top.
I do enough, so that my bread has a light coating of butter on top.

Let cool a few minutes and then remove from pan and onto a plate,
where it will completely cool.

This bread is so yummy warm with butter and jelly, or for sandwiches, etc. You will not be sorry when you make this. It is Divine

* Make your own buttermilk by adding 1 tbl vinegar or lemon juice to milk. Let sit for 5 minutes. The vinegar/lemon juice will cause the milk to turn into buttermilk. Easy peasy!

  4. I have been making my own bread for the past few months now. I do it the same way, I let the bread machine do all the work and then I bake it in the oven. I have a big carton of buttermilk I need to use. I am going to try your bread recipe on Sunday. Do you warm the buttermilk or add it cold? I'll let you know how it turns out!

  5. I made this! I must have taken mine out of the pan too soon, because it collapsed on me, but before that it sure was big and beautiful like yours. I had to bake mine for around 30 minutes. Even though it collapsed, it tasted delicious. I will have to try it again and let it cool longer. Thanks for the tasty recipe!

  8. I always bake my own bread, I would never go back to shop bought bread. I do cheat a little and use a bread maker, and I follow a recipe from the back of a pack of bread flour…BUT…I add half a tespoon of Sesame oil to the mix once it’s no longer dry…the result is a very moreish flavour that cannot be beaten :-)

    1. I use a bread maker as well on dough cycle. When I am being real fancy I use my kitchen aide. It really just depends on how busy I am that day. both ways make it taste great.

    1. No I do bread maybe 2-3 times a week. I end up placing at least 1 loaf in the freezer for a rainy day when I don't feel like making bread.

  10. You just say flour for this recipe, not bread flour. Do you use regular flour or bread flour? I am curious since I notice you said you buy your flour at Costco and I don't remember them having bread flour, but I have been avoiding Costco lately to avoid spending too much money so maybe I am missing something.

  11. Ive never made bread seems easy enough but I dont have a bread maker do I need one? Also what kinda pan do I bake it in?

    1. no you don't need one, you can do it by hand or with a mixer. Check out how I made my homemade hamburger buns. Those I did without a machine. It is the same process for making bread.

  12. I don't currently have a bread maker, however would like to purchase one. What brand bread maker do you use? Do you prefer one brand over another? There is so many out on the market, so I want to get an opinion of what others experiences are with bread makers.

  17. I just made this recipe the other day and let me just say, it was absolutely delicious! It is only the second bread I have made in my new bread maker and I am going to be making it over and over for sure! I seriously could have eaten the whole loaf myself. Thanks for sharing!

  18. I am a newer follower- 7 weeks or so- and I have also started making my own beead. Is there any reason I can not just let it cycle all the way through in the bread machine until it is totally cooked? ... Yes, I am that lazy... :-). Thanks so much!

  21. I am going to get some buttermilk to try this Monday! I would like to make and freeze for upcoming baby. ( March, I am planning my freezing craze in Jan. and Feb.) How would you recommend freezing? ( never froze bread) would it be better to freeze cooked or just the formed dough? If freezing cooked how long do you think it would stay fresh in Freezer?

  23. I love your recipe! Quick question- I'm new to making bread and the process of it. How long do you wait for your second rise? I've done 1 hour and it was huge, then I did 30 minutes and the bread tasted good but was denser. Whats your advice?

It came out all nice & brown & toasty & soo...soo moist! I've always been a bit baking 'impaired' in the bread department until I tried this bread recipe. I could seriously get in trouble with a loaf of this bread & some jam. :)

  26. I am new to bread making and don't have a bread machine. I am looking into it but I don't want to botch this recipe without one. So I looked at how you made your hamburger buns and just want to make sure this sounds right before I attempt. So you would mix warm water, oil, brown sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes. Add buttermilk, salt, and flour and knead???

  29. What is the difference in using the gluten in the bread or not?

    1. Adding gluten is not essential, but it does allow your bread to stick together better.

  34. I don't understand why you would have to take this out of the bread maker to bake. I make buttermilk bread in mine and just set it on white bread. Once you have done the initial checking to make sure your consistency is good you never need to touch it again until it's done.

  35. I found this recipe about 4 to 6 weeks ago and have been making a loaf a week. It is the best recipe I've tried. Last night, I made the recipe as is and instead of making it as bread, I made them into dinner rolls to go with homemade soup. OH MY GOD!!!! They were to die for and they were so light and fluffy!! Thank you!
