Geography: Learning the Continents

In the past week or so we have begun to attempt a little bit of geography. I figured it would be a good thing for Miss Priss and Bubba to be able to at least identify the 7 continents and be able to point them out on a map. Well right now we are just focusing on naming them, which I think is going pretty well. Eventually I hope to focus on each one individually and maybe learn a little bit about each one, but for right now naming them is what we are focusing on.

I knew that we would need a little help and of course a visual. I didn't want to go out and just buy a world map. I wanted Little Miss and bubba to be involved so this is what I came up with.

When we first started learning about the continents, I went onto Crayola.com and printed off a world map coloring page. I had each of my littles color the map and we labeled it together. We have hung our maps up and have them there to refer to each day.

After a few days I thought we needed something even more hands on and BIGGER. This is what we did:

We took a poster board and I had them paint it blue for the ocean.
Eventually we will label the oceans, but we have not yet.
I went onto Here and printed off a coloring page for each continent. I did this on white card stock. I colored them myself, labelled them, and laminated them.
We now have a great activity for learning the continents. They can practice placing the continents where they go. We have even begun talking about Pangea. Bubba likes trying to make a mega continent.

I am now just trying to think of more crafts, etc. to do with the continents. Does anyone have any ideas????

Please e-mail me or comment and let me know. This would so help :>

Have a Blessed Day!

  2. Hi Danielle, my husband read your article on yahoo, and said you sounded just like me :-) We do almost the same exact things as you. We live in NJ and still owe on our house and van but apart from that we are debt free. My kids are also homeschooled-3, 7 and 10. Challenging to homeschool these 3 different age groups. Anyway admire your take charge attitude and you are a role model for everything you do. Cheers and look forward to reading more of your blog. Nadia

  5. Thank you so much for sharing! I saw an inflated blue balloon which students had pasted the continents on to make their own globes. ( Pinterest) Could be fun!
