Black History Month: Fredrick Douglas

Well since February is black history month, we have celebrated it by learning about people from our past.

I have tried to keep things simple for my littles. Our local library has a great amount of books for the kindergarten and first grade grade level. This was perfect, since Miss Priss and Bubba are still young. We have talked a little bit about slavery. I didn't know if this would be a hard thing for them to understand, but it has gone over pretty well. We are learning about one or two person each week and coloring a picture of each person. We then have been taping them to a wall in the apartment and reviewing each day about the different people we have learned about. The first African- American we learned about was Frederick Douglas.

We read Frederick Douglass: Writer, Speaker, and Opponent of Slavery (Biographies)

I printed out a coloring page for Fredrick Douglas from HERE.

We also located Maryland on a map and talked about what the definition of a slave was.

I will be posting more on what we do this month for Black History Month, but until then here is a list of who I have planned on us learning about this month:

Abraham Lincoln
Harriet Tubman
Rosa Parks
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mae Jemison

Have a Blessed Day!
