Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.

So this posts is about what we did on Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. Well to be honest it wasn't until Friday night, when I was told by a friend what Monday was, that I even starting thinking of what we could do. I had totally spaced it. For some reason I always mentally place MLK day during February because of Black History month. I do this every year. You would think that I have learned by now, but I have not. Lucky for me I always have a copy of my What Your Preschooler Needs to Know: Get Ready for Kindergarten (Core Knowledge Series). This has a  little mini history section on Martin Luther Kings life. This saved me on Monday. We read from this book and then talked about the various things that King did during his life to help others. We talked about being a good friend and then we did a few fun activities to help supplement what we had talked about. We did not spend all day on this but we did use this as a History topic.

We played Martin Luther King Memory Match. When they would flip over the cards they would tell what letter the picture started with and then they would clap out the syllables for me.

The memory match pictures included pictures of King, doves, balloons, and birthday cakes.

Here they are singing Happy Birthday Mr. King and decorating pictures of cupcakes.

We practiced writing Happy Birthday on the bottom of their coloring sheets (Libby did not write hers. I did and she traced it)

We also practiced writing ways that we can be a better friend to those around us. Keagan said that he could clean out the fish bowl and become a better friend to his fish. So sweet!

Overall we had a fun day celebrating the birthday of a wonderful, peaceful man.
I still have more to post to get us caught up. This week we are moving onto Bears and our reading theme for last week and this week is Stuart Little. We have been reading this book and it is going fantastically (is that a word? I think so). I plan to post about that as well later next week, once we are finished. Anyway hope your Wednesday is going wonderfully!

Have a Blessed Day!
