Gingerbread Men Word Families

Here is what we are doing this month to work on word families. I got all these templates from The Mailbox magazine Kindergarten 2010. My local library has a stack of the current years issues of these books. These are great books for home schooling. They range from grades Pre-K to 5th. Such a great resource.  I love them!

With the first part we did some felt board stuff with them. I printed out a set of 5 gingerbread houses and I colored them each a different color. I then had one gingerbread man. I would hide him behind one of the houses and we would sing this chant.

Gingerbread man, Quiet as a mouse, are you in the (pick a color) house.

The kids thought this was a blast. Especially Miss Priss.

Then we moved onto word families. I wrote a word family on each house (-ot,-at,--an, -ig). I gave each of the kids a few gingerbread men. Each man had a word written on it (hot, cat, can, etc)
The kids then took turns placing their gingerbread men in the right home.

We then talked about rhyming and grouped our words into rhyming partners. We talked about how each word in the same house all rhyme (cat, rat, mat, etc). This learning tool I made is awesome and it really didn't cost anything. It is also great that you can use it for many teaching opportunities.
Well that's all for now. I am hoping to catch up on my Christmas ABC's today and maybe do a little baking and delivering. Hope you are all having a wonderful Christmas Vacation. I know I am!

Have a Blessed Day!

  1. Hi Danielle! That looks like a very fun project for decorating and play. Your daughter probably didn't even realize she was learning too.

Thanks for sharing this idea on my gingerbread party for other parents and grandparents. You forgot to add the link back, so please make sure you fix that. :)

  3. I love your blog! I am in need of more ideas like this, as I've recently moved back to the US from overseas. Is there a place where I can print it out from?
    Have a great week!
